Chime and Zelle are two popular finance apps that make it easy to send and receive money.
If you are interested in knowing the answer to -Does Chime have Zelle, this post is going to be quite helpful. Chime can work with Zelle, but the answer is not straightforward and in this post, we will talk about all the steps you need to follow to start using Chime with Zelle.
Understanding Chime and Zelle Compatibility
Chime is a mobile banking app that offers all the services a normal bank will offer with the help of technology. It is not actually a bank but a financial technology company which offers banking services in partnership with two banks- The BanCorp Bank and Strides Bank
Zelle on the other hand is a free money transfer service. It is owned by a consortium of seven banks that includes Bank of America, J P Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo.etc. under the company name “Early Warning Services”. Zelle allows you to move money between two US Bank Accounts almost instantly using either the email id or US phone number linked to the bank account.
Since Chime (though not exactly a bank) is essentially linked to a US based Bank Account offered by The BanCorp Bank or Strides Bank, you should be able to use a Chime Account with Zelle..
But here is the issue-Chime does not offer any built-in option within its app to use Zelle. Zelle provides that even if your bank does not offer Zelle integrated within its app, you can still download the Zelle App and enroll in Zelle using the debit card issued by the bank.
So if we put the facts together- You have to download the Zelle App and add your Chime account or Chime Debit card as a payment method within Zelle to use Zelle with CHime.
But does this really work?
Does Chime Work With Zelle
Chime does not provide an inbuilt option to use Zelle within its app. However, you can practically use a Chime Account with Zelle, by linking your Chime Debit Card in the Zelle App. If you are able to add your Chime Debit Card in Zelle, you can use Zelle money transfer service to transfer the funds from your Chime Account.
But recently many users have started facing issues in adding Chime Debit Cards to Zelle. Apparently, Zelle has been rejecting Chime Card by classifying it as a “Prepaid Card” which is not supported by Zelle.
It seems this is a recent change in this classification, as it was possible to add a Chime Debit Card earlier with Zelle. And the users who already have their Chime card linked in Zelle are still able to use this option.
However, Zelle is no longer allowing Chime users to link with Zelle.
This may be due to the fact that fintechs like Chime etc. offer their own transfer service with the App and are viewed as competitors to Zelle, which is a product of traditional banks.
However, it may be a temporary issue which may be resolved with time. You can try your luck to add a Chime Debit Card in Zelle App by using the steps below.
How to Use Chime with Zelle [Steps]
i) Download and Install the Zelle app on your phone
First step is to download the Zelle App on your phone. You can download it from Apple App Store if you are using iPhone or Google Play Store if you are using Android
ii) Complete Registration in Zelle App
You need to sign up on the Zelle App by entering your US Mobile Number.
You can use your Mobile Data Connection while signing up, as Zelle will be verifying your US Mobile number for the account set up.
For this Tap on
- Get Started if you see this button on opening the app or the option “Don’t have an account? Sign Up”.
- Next enter your US Mobile Number and tap on continue
- Read and accept the terms and conditions of using Zelle, if you agree
If you already have registered on Zelle, you can sign in a normal manner.
iii) Next Go to Settings (gear icon) on Zelle App Home Screen to add payment method
You need to go to Settings (gear icon) on the Zelle App, which opens the menu. Next Select “Account” from the list of options, which gives you options to add a bank account
iv) Add your Chime Debit Card as a payment method in Zelle
- Tap on switch account which allows you to add a new debit card or bank, in case you already have an existing bank account linked to Zelle
- Next tap on “Don’t See My Bank” when it asks you to link a bank
- Next you will get the option to link card
- Enter your Chime Debit card details like full card number, expiration date, CVV etc.
You will get a confirmation that the card was added successfully, if it works.
You can then use money in your Chime account to transfer and make payments using Zelle, using the Chime Debit card as a payment method.
Another hack you can try is to link your Chime account to an external bank account, which works with Zelle App like Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo etc. To link an external account you own to your Chime Spending Account – Log-in into the Chime app, then go to the Settings, tap “Link a Bank Account”, choose from one of the banks listed and enter your other bank’s login credentials.
You can then transfer funds from such an external bank account to Chime. However, such transfer can take upto 5 business days to complete as per Chime website.
Unfortunately, there is no clear answer if you can currently use Chime with Zelle. This may be resolved with time as ideally Zelle, does allow debit card of US based bank account. You can best make an attempt to add your Chime Debit Card in Zelle App. Or use the indirect method of using an external bank account as a bridge.
